Are You Seeking Asylum In The United States?

When people flee a country due to fear, one of the few options available to them is to apply for an asylum. The laws regarding this are complex, but if you are in Florida, attorney Mark Citrin is here to answer your questions.

The Basics Of Asylum

Asylum in the United States is available to aliens who refuse to return to their country of nationality because of past persecution or a well-founded fear of future persecution by the government or groups that the government is unwilling or unable to control on account of the aliens’:

  • Race
  • Nationality
  • Religion
  • Membership in a particular social group
  • Political opinion

In most cases, the alien must apply for asylum within one year of last entry into the USA, with certain specific exceptions to this deadline. Aliens with criminal convictions for particularly serious offenses may be denied asylum as will aliens who firmly “resettled” in a third country before entering the USA, or aliens who voluntarily returned to their country of citizenship after being persecuted there.
